Safe Creative and Copyrighted.com are online copyright registries. People look for alternatives because of price, because they would rather not upload unreleased work, or because they want a different kind of record.
Your files never leave your computer. With TimeBinder, each file is hashed locally on your own device. Nothing is uploaded or stored by TimeBinder.
What is the difference between a copyright registry and a timestamp?
Short answer: a private registry such as Safe Creative or Copyrighted.com takes an upload of your work, stores a copy, issues a dated certificate and registers the work in its own registry. A TimeBinder timestamp never uploads your file: it records the file’s fingerprint on the Bitcoin blockchain. An ASAP TimeBind can be checked independently; a Pooled TimeBind is verified through TimeBinder.
Neither is a government copyright office. Prices below were checked on each provider’s official pricing page on 30 October 2026 and may change.
What is TimeBinder? TimeBinder is a blockchain timestamping service. It shows that a digital file existed no later than a specific time, and that it still matches its fingerprint, by anchoring the file’s SHA-256 fingerprint to the Bitcoin blockchain. Files are hashed in your browser and never uploaded, and each TimeBind comes with a Proof of Time Certificate that can be checked later. It doesn’t show who created a file or that its contents are true.
What these registries do
- Safe Creative (based in Spain) registers works you upload and issues a certificate with hashes and a timestamp. It offers Express registration at 20 USD plus VAT per work and subscription plans, plus extras such as misuse notices and certified emails or web captures. Safe Creative says it uses double time-stamping, one of them eIDAS qualified, and records fingerprints in a daily audit on public blockchains (Ethereum and Polygon).
- Copyrighted.com registers uploaded works with a privately issued certificate and keeps a backup copy in its storage. It lists a free Basic plan with 5 registrations, Professional at US$19.95 a month or US$119.95 a year, and Business at US$29.95 a month or US$179.95 a year, and offers paid takedowns.
- Neither is a government copyright office. In some countries there is no copyright register at all: GOV.UK says “There is not a register of copyright works in the UK.” In those countries, a private registry is one of several ways to keep dated records. See copyright registration in the UK and in Australia.
How TimeBinder differs
- Nothing is uploaded. Your file is hashed in your browser and only the fingerprint is recorded. Good for unreleased music, manuscripts, designs and confidential files.
- The date is recorded on the Bitcoin blockchain. ASAP TimeBinds can be checked independently; Pooled TimeBinds are verified through TimeBinder.
- It suits versions and drafts. One TimeBind covers up to 10 files, and a Pooled TimeBind costs 1 Token.
- It doesn’t store your files or send takedown notices. You must keep the exact original, and enforcement is up to you or your lawyer.

Which to choose
- Choose a registry if you want the provider to hold a copy of your work, or you value its takedown or notice services.
- Choose TimeBinder if you would rather not upload unreleased work, want an independent record of when each version existed, or timestamp many drafts.
- If you’re in the US, the US Copyright Office says: “You will have to register, however, if you wish to bring a lawsuit for infringement of a U.S. work.” See US copyright registration and copyright registration vs a timestamp.
When TimeBinder isn’t the right tool
- You want the provider to keep a copy of your work for you. TimeBinder never stores your files, so you must keep the exact original.
- You want help sending takedown or misuse notices. TimeBinder doesn’t send them.
- You need a US copyright registration. A timestamp isn’t one.
- You’ll only use Pooled TimeBinds but need a record that can be checked without TimeBinder. Use ASAP.
How to timestamp a file with TimeBinder
Three steps. A Pooled TimeBind is usually recorded within 24 to 48 hours, and often sooner, depending on Bitcoin network activity. ASAP is broadcast straight away, but that does not mean instant confirmation. See how it works for the full process.
Drop your files
Add up to 10 files per TimeBind. Any file type and size works.
unreleased-track.wav · novel-draft.docxHashed on your computer
Your browser works out a SHA-256 fingerprint for each file. Nothing is uploaded. The files never leave your device and TimeBinder never stores them.

The fingerprints are anchored to the Bitcoin blockchain: ASAP (your own transaction, sent straight away) or Pooled (usually recorded within 24 to 48 hours, and often sooner, depending on Bitcoin network activity). You get a Proof of Time Certificate, a PDF with a QR code and the Bitcoin transaction ID.

What a TimeBind shows, and what it doesn’t
What it shows
- That this exact file existed no later than the time recorded on the Bitcoin blockchain
- That a file shown later still matches its fingerprint: the same file gives the same fingerprint, and any edit gives a different one
- A record kept outside your own systems: an ASAP TimeBind can be checked on the Bitcoin blockchain without relying on TimeBinder, and a Pooled TimeBind is verified through TimeBinder
What it doesn’t show
- Who created, wrote or signed the file
- That the contents are true or accurate
- How a court or other decision-maker will treat it: that depends on the jurisdiction and the rules that apply. It isn’t legal advice
Frequently asked questions
Is registering with Safe Creative or Copyrighted.com the same as registering with the US Copyright Office?
No. Both are private registries, not the US Copyright Office. The Copyright Office says: “You will have to register, however, if you wish to bring a lawsuit for infringement of a U.S. work.” It also says: “Registered works may be eligible for statutory damages and attorney’s fees in successful litigation.”
Do I need to upload my files?
With Safe Creative and Copyrighted.com you upload the work, and they store a copy. With TimeBinder only a fingerprint leaves your device, so you must keep the original file yourself.
Which is cheapest?
It depends on how often you register. As listed on 30 October 2026, Copyrighted.com has a free Basic plan with 5 registrations and paid plans from US$19.95 a month or US$119.95 a year; Safe Creative’s Express registration is 20 USD plus VAT per work, or you can subscribe; TimeBinder’s Free plan includes 1 Token every month (1 Pooled TimeBind), extra Tokens are 1 for $5, 3 for $15 or 9 for $40, and paid plans start at US$20 a month. Check each site for current prices.
Can I use TimeBinder and a registry together?
Yes. Some creators register finished works with a registry and TimeBind drafts and versions as they go.
Does TimeBinder send takedown notices?
No. It gives you a dated record of when each file existed. Enforcement is up to you or your lawyer.
