Screenshot timestamping: date your capture files
Clicking opens our plans and pricing page. The Free plan includes 1 Token every month. Files are hashed locally on your computer; nothing is uploaded or stored.
Timestamp your screenshots soon after you take them, keep the originals unchanged, and be clear about what that record does and doesn’t show.
Your files never leave your computer. With TimeBinder®, each file is hashed locally on your own device. Nothing is uploaded or stored by TimeBinder.
Screenshot timestamping: the short answer
Screenshot timestamping means anchoring the SHA-256 fingerprint of your screenshot files to the Bitcoin blockchain soon after you capture them. Later you can show those exact image files existed no later than the recorded time and still match their fingerprints, because any edit produces a different fingerprint. It doesn’t show that what the screenshot depicts is genuine or complete, who took it, or that the page really looked that way. Someone could still argue the screen was altered before capture. So keep the original files, note the URL and the time, and where the page is public also save it to the Wayback Machine. One TimeBind holds up to 10 files, so zip a set of captures and keep that exact zip. A Pooled TimeBind is usually recorded within 24 to 48 hours, and often sooner, depending on Bitcoin network activity.

What is TimeBinder? TimeBinder is a blockchain timestamping service. It shows that a digital file existed no later than a specific time, and that it still matches its fingerprint, by anchoring the file’s SHA-256 fingerprint to the Bitcoin blockchain. Files are hashed in your browser and never uploaded, and each TimeBind comes with a Proof of Time Certificate that can be checked later. It does not prove who created a file or that its contents are true.
How screenshot timestamping works, step by step
Posts get deleted, listings change and messages are edited. A screenshot keeps a copy, but on its own it carries only the dates your device or cloud account gives it, and those are easy to question. A TimeBind adds a date recorded outside your own systems.
- Capture the screen. Use your device’s own screenshot tool and keep the file it saves.
- Note the context. Write down the URL or app, the account name, and the date and time you captured it, in a short text file.
- Group the set. One TimeBind holds up to 10 files. For more, zip the screenshots and your notes together, and keep that exact zip.
- Create the TimeBind soon after. Each file is hashed in your browser and only the fingerprint is recorded on the Bitcoin blockchain. The sooner you do it, the smaller the gap between capture and the recorded time.
- Store the certificate with the originals, and don’t edit, convert or re-save those files.
Make screenshots more useful: full-page captures, URLs, originals, zip sets
- Capture the whole thing. Use a full-page capture or several overlapping screenshots, so nobody can say the important part was cropped out of context.
- Show where it came from. Include the address bar, the account name and any visible date in the shot. Save the page itself as a PDF or HTML file too, if you can.
- Keep originals. Screenshot files carry dates and metadata, but these can be changed and are weak on their own. Check what a file contains with the free file date and metadata inspector.
- Zip sets together. A dated zip of the captures, the saved page and your notes keeps the whole record in one fingerprint.
- Don’t forward, crop or compress first. Messaging apps and social platforms often re-compress images, which creates a different file.
For evidence of your own photos and videos, rather than captures of other people’s content, see proof of ownership of photos and videos.
What a timestamped screenshot shows, and what it doesn’t
What it shows
- That this exact screenshot file existed no later than the time recorded on the Bitcoin blockchain
- That a file shown later still matches its fingerprint: the same file gives the same fingerprint, and any edit gives a different one
- A record of timing kept outside your own devices and accounts
What it doesn’t show
- That what the screenshot depicts is genuine, complete or in context
- Who took the screenshot
- That the web page, post or app really looked that way
- That the file existed any earlier than the recorded time
- How a court or anyone else will treat it. It isn’t legal advice
Pooled TimeBinds (1 Token) are verified through TimeBinder and are usually recorded within 24 to 48 hours, and often sooner, depending on Bitcoin network activity. ASAP TimeBinds (3 Tokens) can be verified independently from the certificate and the Bitcoin blockchain. Checking a TimeBind is always free.
Other options: Wayback Machine, cloud history, a witness statement
A timestamp works best alongside other records, because each covers a different gap.
- The Wayback Machine. For a public web page, the Internet Archive’s Save Page Now makes a capture held by an independent organisation. It can’t capture pages behind a login, private messages or apps. See is the Wayback Machine proof a page existed?
- Cloud version history. Photo and file services keep their own dates, but those records are held by the provider and tied to your account. See cloud version history as proof.
- A witness statement. A written account from you, or from someone who watched you take the screenshots, of what you did and when. Formal processes may need a particular form, such as a statutory declaration in Australia; a lawyer can tell you what is needed.
If the other side says your evidence is fake, read what to do when they say your evidence is a deepfake. To check a timestamped file later, see blockchain file verification.
Which plan suits screenshot evidence
A Pooled TimeBind uses 1 Token and an ASAP TimeBind uses 3, and each holds up to 10 files. The Free plan includes 1 Token every month, which covers one Pooled set of captures. Essential is USD $20 a month for 5 Tokens and Expert is USD $50 a month for 15. Use ASAP for captures you expect to rely on, because it can be checked independently from the certificate and the Bitcoin blockchain. See pricing.
Screenshot timestamping: FAQ
Does a timestamp show a screenshot is real?
No. It shows only that the screenshot file existed no later than the recorded time, and that a file shown later still matches its fingerprint. It doesn’t show that what the image depicts is genuine or complete, who took it, or that the page or app really looked that way.
Should I crop or annotate first?
No. Timestamp the original file straight from your device. Cropping, annotating or re-saving creates a new file with a different fingerprint. Make your marked-up copies afterwards, and keep the original.
Is my screenshot uploaded?
No. Each file is fingerprinted in your browser on your own computer, and only the SHA-256 fingerprint is recorded. Private messages and personal details in the image stay with you.
Is this better than the Wayback Machine?
They do different things. The Wayback Machine is a third-party capture of a public web page. A TimeBind dates your own files, including captures of apps, messages and pages behind a login. When the page is public, use both.
How do I share the evidence later?
Share the original screenshot file with its Proof of Time Certificate. Anyone can check the file with Verify File. An ASAP TimeBind can also be checked independently from the certificate and the Bitcoin blockchain; a Pooled TimeBind is verified through TimeBinder.
